Germany’s largest locomotive depot opens in Nuremberg

DB Schenker Rail has officially opened its new locomotive depot in the south west of Nuremberg – touting it as the biggest freight loco workshop in the country.

The depot, which has taken three years and €24.4 million to build, can house 15 locomotives at a time and will repair every series of DB Schenker Rail vehicles currently in service.

DB has said the new depot will cut carbon emissions significantly, consuming less than half the energy currently used.

Nuremberg has been described as the rail freight hub of southern Germany and while has been completed to upgrade the adjoining passenger station, little investment had been made in the historic workshop next door.

Michael Anslinger, head of production at DB Schenker Rail in Germany, said: “With the new building we improve the production processes and conditions of our Nuremberg train maintenance considerably and thereby reduce costs permanently. And what is just as important to us, we are improving the working conditions for about 150 people who are here working for us.”
