Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) has been awarded a consultancy role on Detroit’s M-1 Streetcar project.

PB will deliver design review and quality assurance services to the programme, which will involve the construction of a 5.1 kilometre light rail line along Woodward Avenue from the city’s downtown, through midtown, to the New Center area.

Local businesses in Detroit have led a major campaign to realise the new light rail system, pledging more than $100 million to its construction. A $25 million grant was also confirmed by the Federal government in January.

Also known as the Woodward Avenue Streetcar Project, the new system will connect to regional Amtrak services and Detroit’s automated people mover.

Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-October 2013 and should be completed by autumn 2015.
