Could this be the Tube train of the future?

Siemens is showing of the futuristic concept Tube train that it hopes could eventually be serving passengers on the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines at a new exhibition showcasing the future of mass transit in London.

A new exhibition at The Crystal in Royal Victoria Docks, entitled ‘Going Underground: Our journey to the future’, explores some of the new technology that could be in use on the London Underground network in the near future.

Based on the EVO design which was unveiled at Railtex in 2011, Siemens has said that the new Inspiro would be 30 per cent more energy efficient and 20 per cent lighter than similar metros.

As well as the Inspiro, the exhibit, which is being held in partnership with London Transport Museum and CBS Outdoor UK, features other concepts and technology designed to revolutionise electronic ticketing, passenger information and station management systems.

Steve Scrimshaw, managing director of Siemens Rail Systems UK, said: “London, in common with many large cities around the world, faces significant transport challenges as a result of ongoing population growth and increased capacity demands.

“Our exhibition highlights some of the innovations that can be considered by cities to help their metro systems tackle these issues and help passengers benefit from an improved travel experience.”

  1. It will be interesting to see what new concepts and innovations appear from Bombardier at Derby, as I am sure that they are not going to allow Siemens to have all the running in new train design.

  2. New concepts and innovations hardly applied to Bombardier designs for London Underground. Even the S stock is actually a rehash of the LUL design done in the 1990’s.

  3. Yes. Well 1st Siemens will build these brand new tube stocks for the Bakerloo & Piccadilly lines as those 2 lines have the oldest stocks and this could be the proposed new tube stocks for the 2 lines and possibly for Central and Waterloo & City lines which would also have these new Siemens Tube stocks. .

  4. Bombardier won’t have the same approach to design as everything is cost and engineer driven. Siemens use external consultancies so the designs are alway top notch plus they understand that design sells. When you look at this train and the companies involved its probably more british than bombardier.
