Contractors have begun preparatory work on an extension to San Francisco’s Muni Metro system.
Around $1.6 billion is being spent on the Central Subway Project, which will extend the T Third Street line by 1.7 miles, linking it with some of the city’s busiest districts.
Early works are now underway, including the installation of monitoring devices, erecting fences and, according to SFMTA, the removal of hazardous materials at the sites of future station sites in Chinatown and SoMa.
Demolition work will soon be carried out by Tutor Perini before construction of the new line starts at the end of the year.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2018.
Mayor Ed Lee said: “The Central Subway project will not only link up our diverse communities in San Francisco, but it will be an engine for job creation and economic growth in our City.”
