The first-ever Siemens Avenio tram has been delivered to Munich.

City officials caught their first glimpse of the first of eight new trams destined for Munich during an unveiling ceremony at Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft’s (MVG’s) depot last week.

MVG ordered the new fleet just over a year ago in a deal worth €29 million.

The first tram of the new fleet will now undergo testing and commissioning for which a completion date is yet to be announced.

Sandra Gott-Karlbauer, chief executive of Siemens’ Urban Transport Business Unit, said: “In spite of the extremely tight schedule we successfully managed to manufacture our Avenio in record time. The Avenio for Munich underscores our ambition to take a leadership role in the German and European market again.”

The new vehicles, which are being built in Vienna, will be deployed across Munich’s light rail network, alongside the existing fleet of Bombardier and Stadler-built trams, to add additional capacity to lines 17, 19, 20, 21 and 22.

Testing will now be carried out at Siemens’ test track in Wegberg-Wildenrath on the first vehicle while the second undergoes additional testing and adjustment work in Munich.
