Paris Metro Line 9 has welcomed the first new metro of a tranche of 66 new trains being delivered to the French capital.

Representatives from transport authority STIF and RATP officially launched the new MF01 trainset on Line 9 last month.

The trains, which are being built by a consortium of Alstom Transport, Bombardier Transport and Areva TA, follow on from previous orders of 44 and 50 units purchased to renew ageing rolling stock on Line 2 and Line 5 respectively.

In 2011, RATP exercised an option for 66 new trains, taking the total number of vehicles ordered since 2001 to 161.

The railcars are built by Bombardier in Crespin and then fitted out by Alstom.

The final trainset will be delivered to Line 9 in 2016.

Alstom claims that the MF01 uses 30 per cent energy than other similar metro trains, in part down to the vehicle’s regenerative braking system.
