A public inquiry has been launched into Transport for London’s (TfL) proposed Northern Line extension to Battersea.
TfL has said that work could begin on a new line west of Kennington to Battersea via Nine Elms as soon as 2015 if planning approval is granted by the government.
The inquiry is expected to take roughly a month, in which time an independent inspector will consider the application’s strengths and weaknesses.
If the project suffers no delays, the new line, which would include a new station at the Battersea Power Station development, could open in 2020.
Michèle Dix, managing director of planning for TfL, said: “We look forward to fully outlining our proposals for the Northern line extension. This public inquiry is part of the planning process.
“If this transport link goes ahead it would create access to the Tube for thousands of people in south London as well as helping to support new jobs and homes in the area.”
