Millions more to use Crossrail than first predicted

Three of Crossrail’s central London stations will reach capacity quicker than originally predicted, according to a new report.

Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Farringdon are now expected to serve a quarter-of-a-million passengers a year by 2026 – 65 million more passengers than were first estimated in 2004.

The findings have been published by Arup who have produced a report designed to help businesses and local authorities make the most of the opportunities that will be created when Crossrail opens in 2018.

The figure represents an increase of 166 million more passengers using the three stations a year than they do today.

Alexander Jan, Arup director and one of the report’s authors, said: “With London’s population growing by two thousand every eight days, Arup’s analysis suggests Crossrail’s stations will be somewhat busier sooner than was originally anticipated. This is in line with the experience of London Overground improvements and DLR extensions.

“Crossrail stations are designed to handle the flow but there are going to be significant opportunities – and some challenges – for property owners, local authorities, retailers, employers, the entertainment industry and residents.”

  1. Best solution would be to redevelop the west end like Canary wharf where its stations are fully integrated into their buildings allowing many workers to go from train to their desk without going outside via subways that include shops and restaurants .

Surely transport is mainly about getting from where you are to where you want to go and I fail to see why large numbers of Crossrail users will suddenly want to leave the network at these stations!

If this is the case then mayor Boris and TFL had better get a move on with total upgrade of Oxford Circus Station along the lines of its neighbours with a new booking hall on site of BHS store with step free lifts and escalators to all lines while opening up the rabbit Warren of tunnels this station has!
