Virgin Trains has ended a 17-year relationship with Rail Gourmet after signing a new £30 million contract with DHL Supply Chain.

The logistics company will manage all Virgin’s onboard catering until the current franchise expires in 2017, taking over from Rail Gourmet which has been providing the service since 1997.

DHL said its main aim is to offer a “range of innovative menu options using locally sourced and healthy ingredients” to passengers on the West Coast main line.

Martin Phillips, head of catering logistics at Virgin Trains, said: “Our goal is to be the best and most innovative rail franchise operator in the UK.

“To do this we needed a strategic partner who shares our ambitions and DHL proved a great cultural fit. By focusing on our core competencies I’m confident that we can deliver something truly exceptional.”
