Victoria’s Coalition Government has ordered an extra VLocity train from Bombardier on top of an existing order with the rolling stock manufacturer.
An extra $17 million three-car train will built in addition to the 40 new carriages being built for the region’s V/Line network.
The news was announced by Premier Denis Napthine and Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder during a visit to Bombardier’s facility in Dandenong.
Napthine said: “This new three-carriage train will be capable of seating an additional 228 passengers, each and every trip for commuters travelling from Traralgon, Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo.
“Previously, the Coalition Government announced a $261 million package to provide new rolling stock and associated infrastructure for the V/Line network. Thanks to good project management, we have been able to add this additional train to our existing order.
“This announcement means we are now boosting our VLocity train fleet by more than 32 per cent as part of my Government’s commitment to provide more public transport services, to move more people, more often.”
The first of the 43 new VLocity railcars are due to be delivered in 2014, with the last of the trains expected to arrive in late 2016.
