Prince Khalid bin Bandar has broken ground on line 4 of the Riyadh Metro two months ahead of schedule.
The governor of Riyadh province was joined by Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz, deputy governor, to launch the construction phase on the first of three new metro lines being built by the FCC-led FAST consortium.
FAST is designing and constructing three of six automated metro lines being built in Saudi Arabia’s capital.
Around €16.3 billion is being spent on the city’s new metro system, which is set to open in just five years time. In total, the three lines will feature 25 stations, 65 kilometres of track, 24 kilometres of viaducts and 69 trains.
The FAST consortium, which is delivering lines 4 (orange), 5 (yellow) and 6 (purple,) includes Samsung, Alstom, Strukton, Freyssinet Saudi Arabia, Typsa, Atkins, and Setec.
Work began on one of the new line 4 stations at King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh last week.
Other project partners include the Ansaldo STS-led Arriyadh New Mobility group (ANM), which is building line 3 (red) and the BACS consortium, headed by Bechtel, which is delivering lines 1 (blue) and 2 (green).
