Siemens to upgrade signalling on Vienna metro line

Wiener Linien, the body which operate’s Vienna’s public transport network, has awarded Siemens a contract to modernise the signalling system currently in use on the U4 metro line.

Between 2016 and 2019, Siemens will commission five new interlockings and a new modern automatic train control system.

The €40 million upgrade will allow Wiener Linien to reduce headways and increase capacity on the 17-kilometre line which links Hütteldorf in the west of the city with Heiligenstadt in the north.

In 2013, the City of Vienna approved the funding to complete a programme of improvements on the U4 route. The line currently lacks a second track to allow broken down vehicles to be moved on to, increasing the likelihood of significant delays and disruption.

As well as constructing new crossovers, the package of works included funding for new interlockings and signalling equipment.
