Russian steel manufacturer Evraz has shipped its first batch of 100-metre length rail.

The head-hardened rail will be used by Russian Railways (RZD) on the Oktyabrskaya Railway in the north west of the country, which includes the high-speed line between Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Evraz is the first domestic manufacturer to produce the longer-length rail, with RZD previously relying on foreign suppliers.

More than RUB 18 billion was spent upgrading the NTMK steel mill in the Urals, increasing its output to 950,000 tonnes of rail a year. Production of the 100-metre length rail product began in November 2013 after Evraz obtained the appropriate license.

The manufacturer said it would be looking closely at export opportunities across the rest of Europe.

Ilya Shirokobrod, Evraz’s vice president, head of the railway products division, said: “This is another high technology product added to Evraz’s portfolio that complies with advanced quality standards.

“Not only will it help us reinforce our home market positions, but also to discover new export opportunities.”

Shirokobrod added: “We seek to continuously improve the range of our railway products, and intend to certify DT350CC rails for combined high-speed traffic (lines with speeds up to 350-400 km/h) before the end of this year. To this end, the rails have successfully passed the lab tests and a pilot delivery of these rails has already been made to in-track tests in Scherbinka (RZhD test loop).”
