La Poste outlines future rail freight strategy

Listen to this article

French postal carrier La Poste has said it plans to increase the volume of goods it transports by rail by 30 per cent over the next three years.

La Poste, which currently operates the yellow TGV mail trains around France, is to invest €100 million between now and 2017 improving its rail and road freight service.

More than €23 million will be spent on a new multimodal freight hub at Bonneuil sur Marne- a southeastern suburb of Paris – which will combine three current operations, including its TGV terminal at Paris Charolais.

Sadly, La Poste’s yellow TGVs don’t form part of the organisations long-term strategy. After 30 years, the high-speed mail trains will be taken out of service in 2015 to coincide with the opening of the new terminal. Due to the changing needs of La Poste’s customers, swap bodies will be used to transport mail and small goods instead.
