Bucharest commissions new metro trains

Passengers got their first glimpse of Bucharest’s new M2 line metro fleet.

Spanish rolling stock specialist CAF is supplying 16 new six-car metro trains to the Romanian capital. The vehicles have been completing a dynamic testing programme to gain approval from the Romanian Railway Authority (AFER) since January.

The new trains will enter service on line M2 gradually throughout the second half of 2014. Metrorex plans to move the line’s Bombardier stock to line M3, allowing the operator to decommission more of the network’s Astra IVA trains, which are approaching the end of their life.

The first four trains of the €97 million order were built in Beasain, Spain. The remaining units were assembled in Grivitain, Bucharest

Metrorex has said the new fleet will reduce maintenance costs by around 40 per cent over the current vehicles.
