SBB has placed two orders with Stadler for 19 regional Kiss trainsets for the Zurich S-bahn and six Flirt EMUs for the Canton of Vaud.

The new 19 double-deck vehicles are being procured on behalf of the Zurich Transport Network at a cost of CHF 397 million (€327 million). The new trains will supplement the existing fleet of 30 double-deck S-bahn trains when they are delivered to SBB in 2018.

The trainsets will operate on lines S11 (Zurich Altstetten- Zurich HB -HB Winterthur – Schaffhausen/Roman Horn/Wil) and S12 ( Brugg – Zürich HB – Winterthur – Seuzach/Winterthur Seen).

The Canton of Vaud is looking to increase capacity across its light rail and S-bahn network with six four-car Flirt trainsets, in an order worth CHF 62 million (€51 million). The new vehicles are expected to arrive in Vaud in 2016.

SBB has indicated that it plans to invest around CHF 1 billion (€820 million) in new trains and refurbishment projects over the next few years.
