Siemens, Hitachi, CAF and Bombardier have been shortlisted for a contract to supply a new suburban train fleet for London Overground.

The order will include 39 new trains in total, of which 31 will be used on the newly devolved West Anglia franchise routes and eight will replace diesel stock on the Gospel Oak to Barking route.

Transport for London (TfL) today announced the four bidders shortlisted to supply new rolling stock to run on new London Overground routes out of Liverpool Street station and to replace current two-car diesel trains on the Gospel Oak Barking route.

Mike Brown, TfL’s managing director of London Rail, said: “New and reliable trains have been a key contributor to the huge success of London Overground since TfL took over the management of Silverlink Metro services in 2007.

“Our customers have now come to expect something better from London Overground and that is why this competition is so important to take our service on the Overground to the next level.

“We welcome the wide international interest from the rolling stock market in bidding for this order and look forward to engaging with the chosen manufacturers to define a standard that will set a new benchmark for TfL for many years to come.”

  1. I suppose Bombardier have the ‘home advantage’, having manufactured all LO’s current stock, so giving it the advantage of commonality, etc. It would be nice for the contract to go to either Bombardier or Hitachi, so that the stock is British built.

  2. Bombardier would carry on building more Class 378’s for the Liverpool St-Chingford/Broxbourne/Chestnut/Enfield Town West Anglia Metro, Romford-Upminster and the electrified Gospel Oak-Barking and if possible to reopen Primrose Hill station as part of the new Stratford-Watford Junction London Overground service.

Bombardier has built-Class 378/0’s, Class 378/1’s and Class 378/2’s for London Overground.
Class 378/3’s would be built for those new services in 2015.

  3. 31 brand new Class 710 trains to replace the Class 315’s and Class 317’s on the Lea Valley Liverpool St-Cheshunt, Chingford and Enfield Town routes.

8 brand new Class 710 trains to replace the Class 172’s on the Gospel Oak-Barking line that some of the Class 172’s could be used on West Ealing-Greenford line if London Overground does take over that line.

1 brand new Class 710 train to be used on the Romford-Upminster line replacing the Class 317 train.

Some brand new Class 710 trains also to be built for Euston-Watford Junction DC line and Stratford to Richmond North London Line services.

    • Thanks for clarifying that they are indeed all “brand new”. I wasn’t sure until you reminded me.

It’s the Gospel Oak-Barking Line which is using Class 710s and not NLL.

      • Well Watford-Euston DC Line could have couple Class 710’s being used whilst the rest are for the GOBLIN line, Lea Valley lines and Romford to Upminster line (which could of been named as Havering Line).
