A Laing O’Rourke/Ferrovial joint venture has been announced as the preferred bidder to construct London Underground’s Northern Line extension.

Subject to final approval by the Secretary of State, the contract will be signed in August and work should begin in early 2015.

TfL also received proposals from Costain and Sir Robert McAlpine, Balfour Beatty and Bam, and Bechtel and Strabag.

Speaking at Infrarail earlier in the year, Shaw said that a rapid planning and consultation period could see the Northern Line extension to Battersea and Nine Elms completed before Crossrail, which will become fully operational in December 2019.

The project, which is currently awaiting approval from the Secretary of State, will create a new station at Battersea Power Station, which is at the centre of a major redevelopment programme.

A Transport for London spokesman said: “Following negotiations with the two remaining bidders for the Northern line extension design and build contract, London Underground has selected Ferrovial Agroman Laing O’Rourke Joint Venture as the preferred bidder.

“Contract award is planned for late August 2014. Other tenderers have been notified and should we fail to reach agreement with the preferred bidder London Underground may reopen negotiations with those who have been stood down.”

TfL will initially operate 10 to 16 trains an hour on the new line. Eventually, 28 trains an hour will serve the extension.
