Ulm announces intention to buy Siemens trams

Ulm’s public transport operator Stadtwerke Ulm (SWU) has named Siemens as the winner of a €31 million contract to supply the trams for the city’s new light rail line.

SWU plans to procure 12 Avenio M trams to operate on the new 10.5-kilometre line 2, subject to the project receiving final approval. SWU hopes to break ground on line 2 in early 2015.

Siemens bid came out top of Europe-wide tender, which was launched in 2012, beating off competition from seven other manufacturers.

The first new vehicle could be delivered within two years of the contract being finalised.

SWU currently operates a fleet of 10 Combino trams, the predecessor to the Avenio M.
