MTA has released details of its 2015-2018 financial plan which includes the restoration of weekend services on the Long Island Railroad’s (LIRR) West Hempstead Branch.

Weekend train services were cancelled along the route in 2010 as part of an MTA austerity programme.

The 2015-2018 budget sets out a variety of enhancements and new services which will be introduced over the next few years, including an extended weekend service on the J Line.

The financial plan commits over $400 million to safety improvements and increased operational and maintenance costs.

In June, the LIRR carried more customers than it has in any month in almost six years.

LIRR president Patrick Nowakowski said: “These investments will help address community and customer requests to strategically add service where it is needed most.”
