The redevelopment of Birmingham’s New Street station is expected to be complete by September 2015, Network Rail has announced.

Earlier this month, Network Rail celebrated another milestone in the construction of New Street’s new atrium roof, as the first ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) strip – the same material as is used at the Eden Project – was fitted to the steelwork.

The next phase of construction will see around 6,000 tonnes of reinforced concrete removed from the site to form the inside of the atrium.

Chris Montgomery, project director for Network Rail, said: “The redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station will transform the experience for the millions of passengers who use the station every year and allow it to handle the ever increasing number of people who choose to travel by train. This project is also a great example of how investment in our transport infrastructure can boost the economy.

“The New Street redevelopment, complemented by Grand Central, will improve the city centre environment in Birmingham, creating new public space to stimulate regeneration and create up to one thousand new jobs for local people.”

New Street’s redevelopment is one component of the £750 million Gateway Project described by project partners Mace and Network Rail as ‘the biggest refurbishment project in Europe’.

The new concourse, which will be three-and-a-half-times bigger, will bring natural light into New Street for the first time in over 40 years.
