Nottinghamshire council to fund study into Kimberley tram extension

Broxtowe Borough Council is to fund a study into the feasibility of extending Nottingham’s tram network to Kimberley via Eastwood.

The news has been welcomed by Amber Valley Borough Council which is keen to work in partnership with Broxtowe to explore the possibility of eventually extending the tram system beyond Kimberley to Ripley.

Nottingham Express Transit (NET) is currently testing a new expanded timetable ahead of the introduction of its new fleet of Citadis trams in late August/early September.

An extension of the tram network to Clifton and Beeston will now not be ready for passengers until 2015. Complications in construction pushed back the original December completion date.

Amber Valley Borough Council Leader Councillor Paul Jones said: “If the proposed tram line to Kimberley and Eastwood does go ahead the network becomes tantilisingly close to Amber Valley and we would then be fully committed to seeing if a Ripley link is possible. All sorts of economic and tourism opportunities could be opened up for the Borough with a tram link to Nottingham.

“I will be discussing with the leader of Broxtowe Borough Council how we can become involved and take a report to the next appropriate council meeting. I am sure it is something that the town and parish councils along the route would be interested in becoming involved in and we will be writing to them for their support.”
