A Class 59 locomotive which was exported to Germany in 1997 is returning to the UK.

EMD locomotive 59 003 has been purchased by GB Railfreight (GBRf) from Heavy Haul Power International (HHPI) to bolster the operators position in the aggregate and bulk materials market.

Announcing the purchase of its first Class 59 this week, GBRf said the ‘Yeoman Highlander’ should be in the UK by the end of August and back into service by December.

John Smith, managing director of GBRf, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing the ‘Yeoman Highlander’ back to the UK. The extra power it provides will be of a prime importance for our work in the aggregates market and will allow us to further expand our business in other areas.

“This will be the first Class 59 to join our fleet, and from December, we hope to have it working on flows across the UK.”
