The Indian government has backed the construction of a Rs 8,680 (€1 billion) metro project in the city of Nagpur.

Two lines, a north-south and an east-west alignment, will be partly funded by the Indian government after the 38-kilometre network received approval from the Union Cabinet on August 20.

India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the Nagpur Metro’s foundation stone the following day.

In a statement, the government said: “The two corridors, together, will also bring about a total transformation in the city`s urban transportation scenario by considerably reducing traffic congestion and bringing in a fast, comfortable, safe and affordable mass transportation system for the people of Nagpur. This in turn will contribute to further development and prosperity of the area.

“The development and prosperity of Nagpur will also contribute to the prosperity and development of the nation.”

Feasibility studies for the project, which will be led by the Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation – a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, where completed by the Delhi Metro Corporation.
