Jerusalem light rail network targeted in violent clashes

A third of Jerusalem’s light rail fleet has had to be taken out of service following violence in Israel’s capital.

Eight of the system’s 15 light rail cars have had to be withdrawn after being damaged during violent clashes in the city, according to a report in the Times of Israel.

Jerusalem’s light rail network as a whole has suffered significant damage since the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians began in July. The system’s operator, CityPass, has warned of severe disruption to services.

Jerusalem Light Rail opened in 2011. The 14-kilometre network consists a dual-track line from Pisgat Ze’ev through the Old City and the city centre, terminating at Mount Herzi.
