PKP Cargo has revealed plans to acquire majority stakes in three rail freight operators as it looks to strengthen its position inside and outside of Poland.
The operator has signed a letter of intent with European Railfreight II to acquire 100 per cent of CTL Logistics. CTL, which employs more than 1,800 people, possesses a fleet of around 200 locomotives operating freight services throughout Poland and the rest of Europe.
PKP Cargo is awaiting a response from the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection as to whether the takeover can go ahead.
PKP Cargo has also been given the exclusive right to negotiate a possible acquisition of Advanced World Transport (AWT). An agreement has been signed to carry out due diligence ahead of any potential deal with the Czech freight service provider, which operates international services to Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia.
AWT employs around two thousand people and transported 12 million tonnes of cargo in 2013.
PKP Cargo has also indicated that in 2015 it hopes to acquire a 50 per cent share in Pol-Trans Copper, a wholly-owned subsidiary of KGHM Polish Copper SA.
