The Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium (NRT) has been awarded a $3.7 billion contract to build and operate a new 36-kilometre suburban railway in Sydney.

NRT, which consists MTR, John Holland, Leighton Contractors, UGL Rail Services and Plenary Group, will build eight new stations, carry out all track and signalling work, procure the rolling stock, and operate and maintain the system for 15 years under the Operations, Trains and Systems (OTS) contract.

As well as announcing the winner of the OTS contract, the New South Wales Government has revealed artist renderings of the North West Rail Link’s future fleet, which will be built by Alstom.

The system will operate 22 driverless six-car vehicles using a Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system, which will also be provided by Alstom.

When the North West Rail Link opens in 2019, MTR will operate 15 trains an hour during peak times.

Lincoln Leong, acting chief executive officer of MTR Corporation, said: “This is a very exciting project for MTR and our consortium partners.

“Together, we are absolutely committed to delivering a world class new railway system for Sydney and demonstrating how our international expertise can contribute to the future growth of this great global city.”
