A six-year project to overhaul Nederlandse Spoorwegen’s (NS) first generation of double-deck VIRM trains

NS has said the overhauled VIRM fleet will be 20 per cent more efficient through the installation of LED lighting, which adjusts depending on the amount of natural light, and an energy-saving HVAC system.

The exteriors of the electric multiple units (EMUs) will also be streamlined to reduce drag.

The refurbishment, which is being carried out at NedTrain’s Haarlem depot, will also include a new seating layout, passenger information screens and onboard Wi-Fi.

A total of 416 carriages – the first of which were delivered to NS in 1994 – will be upgraded between 2014 and 2020 at NedTrain’s Haarlem depot.
