The European Commission has agreed to provide €74 million to fund Polish operator PKP’s new fleet of high-speed Pendolino trains.

Alstom is supplying 20 trainsets to the operator – the first of which will enter service in December.

During dynamic testing, Poland’s new intercity train broke both and the Pendolino record, reaching a top speed of 293 km\h.

Earlier this month, PKP Intercity received approval from Poland’s Rail Transport Office to operate its new fleet of Pendolino trains at 250 km/h on the country’s rail network.

PKP has said it plans to have 18 seven-car trains available for the start of service at the end of the year. The Pendolinos will be rolled out onto several routes out of Warsaw to cities such as Gdynia, Rzeszow, Wroclaw and Krakow.

The new fleet of long-distance trains has been built at Alstom’s Savigliano factory in Italy.
