DB awards contracts for ICE overhaul

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has awarded two contracts covering the installation of new signalling and traction equipment on its high-speed trains.

Alstom has received a €23 million contract to equip 40 ICE 1 units will its ERTMS Level 2 signalling solution, Atlas. The agreement, which includes a six-year maintenance deal and an option to fit out a further 19 trains, will cut the six-hour journey time between Berlin and Munich by a third on first-generation ICE vehicles.

The first ICE 1 set with the new signalling system is expected to enter passenger circulation from December 2017.

Alstom and DB have said the modernised trains will run as far as Basel under ERTMS Level 1.

A second contract has been awarded to Mitsubishi Electric Corporation for the installation of new traction equipment on 46 ICE 2 trains. Mitsubishi has said the upgrade will reduce the amount of energy consumed by the high-speed trains.
