Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) and operator SMRT have announced plans to procure 29 new trains by 2019 to increase capacity on the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL).
The new vehicles will add to 41 trains procured in March 2013 for Singapore’s urban rail network, of which 13 have already been delivered and a further 28 will arrive between 2016 and 2017.
The order will take NSEWL’s fleet to 198 trains by 2019 – a 40 per cent increase on the current fleet.
SMRT has said the new trains will be delivered between 2016 and 2019, allowing some of the system’s older units to be upgraded as part of the CBTC signalling upgrade.
