The California High-Speed Rail Authority is seeking expressions of interest for the network’s high-speed trainsets and maintenance facilities.
Manufacturers have until October 22 to submit initial proposals for the supply of up to 95 high-speed trains, capable of speeds of up to 354 km/h, and construction of light and heavy maintenance facilities.
California’s $68 billion high-speed rail network will connect Los Angeles with San Francisco initially but there are proposals to eventually extend the line north and south to Sacramento and San Diego.
The authority has specified a single-deck electric-multiple unit (EMU) based on proven technology which has been in commercial service for at least five years.
The procurement includes a 30-year contract to provide spares and maintenance services.
Chief executive Jeff Morales said: “We are going to have the first true high-speed rail system in America and industry leaders from around the world are eager to talk to us about why their trains should be running on our tracks.
“This is a big moment for our program. The manufacturing of trainsets and the establishing of maintenance facilities will mean more jobs, increased economic benefits, and allow for the possible development of a whole new high-speed rail industry here in California.”
