ProRail has run its first test train through a new four-track railway tunnel beneath the city of Delft.
Work began on the tunnel and new underground station in 2009. Scheduled to open in spring 2015, it will replace an existing two-track viaduct which runs through the city following concerns about capacity and safety.
The Delft tunnel is one component of a €1 billion redevelopment project which includes new housing and commercial spaces.
The Ministry of Transport has provided €330 million to the project, with additional funding coming from the Ministry of Housing, the province of South Holland, The Hague Region, City of Rotterdam and Delft Municipality.
The project has been delivered by a BAM Utiliteitsbouw, Combinatie CrommeLijn (CCL) and Strukton Rail joint venture. Strukton Rail installed the rails, signals, points and overhead catenary.
Testing began in September when the station and tunnel were officially handed over to ProRail.
