Mexico has awarded a consortium of Chinese, Mexican and French companies the contract to construct the country’s first high-speed railway.
The winning consortium included the China Railway Construction Corporation and CSR Corporation, Mexico’s Constructora y Edificadora, GIA, Prodemex, GHP Mexican Infrastructure and Construction TEYA, and SNCF subsidiary Systra.
The 50.82 billion peso (€3 billion) project includes a 210-kilometre route and a fleet of new eight-car high-speed trains.
Capable of 300 km/h operation, the new trains will have a 426 passenger capacity.
New stations will be built in Mexico City and Queretaro, cutting journey times by around two hours compared to the highway.
