Funding has been confirmed for Manchester Metrolink’s Trafford Centre extension as Whitehall commits to greater devolution of power to the city’s authorities.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) plans to submit a Transport and Works Act Order for the 5.5-kilometre line now that the £350 million needed to build it is in place.

Work could begin as soon as 2016 and be completed before the end of the decade.

The majority of the new line will run off-street, with six new stops at Wharfside, Imperial War Museum, Village, Parkway, EventCity and Trafford Centre.

Councillor Andrew Fender, chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “For many years there has been a great deal of enthusiasm and popular demand for a tram service to the Trafford Centre.

“Of course this Metrolink line will also mean hugely improved and sustainable transport links to Trafford Park – one of the region’s largest employers.”

Earlier this week, Metrolink’s new airport line was opened by British Chancellor George Osbourne – 12 months earlier than originally planned.
