SBB cleared to conclude transalpine train order

A Swiss court has lifted a suspension preventing SBB from concluding a CHF 1 billion high-speed train contract with Stadler Rail.

SBB and Stadler have now officially signed a contract for 29 double-deck trains for the Gotthard route following the Federal Administrative Court’s (FAC) ruling.

Stadler was picked in May this year to supply the new transalpine fleet ahead of Talgo and French train builder Alstom. Both companies initially challenged the decision, with Alstom only recently withdrawing its objection.

The FAC described the Spanish manufacturer’s lawsuit as being ‘largely unfounded’ and Talgo must now appeal to the Federal Court if it wishes to pursue the case.

In a statement, SBB said that Stadler is currently assessing whether or not the delay will affect the original 2019 delivery date.
