Sunshine Coast councillors has presented several route options for the city’s proposed light rail line.

The line will connect Maroochydore in the north with Caloundra in the south, passing through Mooloolaba and Kawana. A number of different options have been drawn up for each district.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said: “While we are clearly talking about a network that is some years away, planning for the future has to start now.”

He added: “Our aim is to identify a preferred route and then progress more detailed feasibility studies to look at engineering, costs and timing.

“This will enable council to present a clear case to the Queensland Government on whether light rail is right and feasible for the Sunshine Coast.”

Subject to feasibility and funding, construction could start in 2022 on phase one between Maroochydore and Kawana and open by 2025.
