Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract by Latvian State Railways (LDz) to supply 28 MTU engines to drive upgraded 2M62U freight locomotives.
The CZ LOKO Company will re-engine the locomotives in the Czech Republic before they are returned to service on Latvia’s national rail freight network.
The 2M62U locomotives are being almost completely remanufactured, keeping only the frame and bogies from the original unit.
Michael Haidinger, chief sales officer at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said: “Cooperating with CZ LOKO Company offers us a lot of potential for expanding our foothold in the Eastern European rail market.”
MTU will provide twin 16V Series 4000 R43 units which have a power output of 2,200 kW each.
The first two new engines will be shipped from Friedrichshafen, Germany, before the end of the year. They will then be tested in a prototype and commissioned. All 28 engines will be delivered by 2016.
