Stadler Rail has presented the first new double-deck electric multiple unit (EMU) to Russian train operator Aeroexpress at a ceremony in Moscow.

The Swiss train builder is supplying 25 KISS train sets to Aeroexpress, which operates rail services between Moscow and Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo international airports.

The first train, which is one of four being built in Switzerland, will now undergo testing at a Russian Railways’ test track in Scherbinka.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin was among the officials to witness the arrival of the first six-car train at an Aeroexpress depot in Moscow.

In September, the first carriages were shipped from Altenrhein to Basel, where they travelled by barge down the Rhine River to Amsterdam. They were then loaded onto a coastal freighter bound for Sassnitz, Germany. From there, the carriages were taken by ferry to Klaipeda, Lithuania, where they were coupled together and hauled on Russian gauge track to Minsk.

The remaining 21 sets will be manufactured in Belarus by Stadler Minsk. A total of 118 carriages are being built. These are being divided into 16 four-car trains and nine six-car trains.

Stadler has said the first train is expected to enter service in summer 2015. The remaining units will then be rolled out progressively over the following 12 months.
