Norway’s rail infrastructure manager Jernbaneverket is to receive an additional NOK 480 million (€56.5 million) in 2015 to deal with its ‘maintenance backlog’.

Norway’s Liberal Party and Christian Democratic Party have agreed to allocate an additional NOK 380 million (€45 million) to finance the operation and maintenance of the country’s rail network next year.

Elisabeth Enger, director of Jernbaneverket, said the extra funding was ‘an important turning point for maintenance’.

Jernbaneverket’s maintenance backlog has been estimated at NOK 17 billion (€2 billion). In a statement, the national rail company said the increased budget would also allow it to repair the flood damage at Bergen and Flåmsbana caused by storms in October.
