The first 12 new commuter trains built by Chinese manufacturer CSR Qingdao Sifang have entered service on the Mitre line in Buenos Aires.
On November 25, Minister of Interior and Transportation Florencio Randazzo and President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner launched the new fleet.
CSR Qingdao Sifang was awarded a contract in 2013 to supply operator Trenes Argentinos with new electric multiple units (EMUs) for the city’s Sarmiento and Mitre commuter lines to replace the existing 50-year-old rolling stock. New eight-car vehicles have already been put into revenue service on the Sarmiento lines.
The new trains have already reduced wait times from 18 minutes to 14 minutes. This will go down to 10 minutes as more of the 30 new trains ordered for the line enter service in the new year.
