PKP Intercity Pendolinos carries first passengers

Listen to this article

Polish train operator PKP Intercity has launched its EIC Premium service using its new fleet of high-speed Pendolinos.

On December 14, nine trains entered passenger service between Warsaw and Tricity, Krakow, Katowice and Wroclaw. PKP currently has 15 seven-car Pendolino train sets available and will eventually operate 18 with two spare.

More than 6,000 passengers travelled on the new trains on the service’s opening day.

The Pendolinos are Poland’s first high-speed trains. During dynamic testing, the train broke both the Polish and Pendolino speed record, reaching a top speed of 293 km\h.

With financial support from the European Union, PKP Intercity ordered 20 trains from Alstom in 2011 for €665 million, which includes a 17-year maintenance contract.
