Alstom is to supply new signalling equipment to Egyptian National Railways (ENR) as part of a programme financed by the World Bank.

The contract, which includes maintenance for the subsequent five years, will involve the replacement of electro-mechanical interlockings with Alstom’s ‘Smartlock’ Electronic Interlocking System (EIS) along the 240-kilometre railway between Beni Suef and Asyut.

Other elements include trackside equipment, as well as power supply and the telecommunication systems.

Delivery of the equipment will begin next year and the upgraded line will be operational by the start of 2019.

Alstom has said the introduction of electronic interlockings along the route will increase capacity by 80 per cent.

Gian-Luca Erbacci, senior vice president of Alstom Transport Middle East and Africa, said: “We are pleased to have been awarded this major project which will significantly increase traffic on the line while ensuring higher system availability and greater safety.

“Alstom has been supporting the country’s railway projects for 30 years, including the Cairo metro, and aims to accompany the country for more projects to come.”
