Transport leaders in Ontario have unveiled a mock-up of an Alstom Citadis Spirit – the light rail vehicle chosen for Ottawa’s $2.1 billion Confederation Line.

The full-scale model has been put on display in Ottawa’s Lansdowne Park.

Described as the largest infrastructure project in Ottawa’s 177-year history, the line will connect Tunney’s Pasture in the west of the city to Blair in the east. The line is scheduled for completion in 2018.

As a member of the consortium delivering the new light rail system, Alstom is supplying 34 of its new North American Citadis range. The Citadis Spirit will be able to operate in extreme winter conditions and will have a top speed of 100 km/hour (65 mph).

The mock-up was officially unveiled on January 29 by Mayor Jim Watson, Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Orléans, and Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca.

Galipeau said: “Equipped with these new light rail vehicles, the O-Train Confederation Line will make public transit faster, safer and more convenient for commuters in Ottawa.”
