Siemens has been announced as the preferred bidder to supply 82 double-deck EMUs for the Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) concession.

Subject to approval by several regional transport authorities, the contract is expected to be formally awarded to Siemens by March 26.

The first unit is expected to go into service on RRX routes from the end of 2018. Under the terms of the tender, Siemens will maintain the fleet for a 30-year period.

Rhein-Ruhr transport authority (VRR) said Siemens submitted the most competitive bid compared to its competitors, which included Stadler and a Skoda/Alstom joint venture.
