Etihad Rail DB has been handed control of Stage One of the UAE’s new national main line rail network.

The joint venture between Etihad Rail and Germany’s DB Schenker has taken over the Operation Control Center (OCC) in Mirfa which manages the operation and maintenance of phase one between Shah, Habshan and Ruwais.

Etihad Rail is constructing the network in three phases. Once complete, the network will connect up with Saudi Arabia and Oman, forming an important segment of the greater GCC rail network.

Trial freight services are currently running on Stage One in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi.

Chief executive officer of Etihad Rail Faris Saif Al Mazrouei said: “The OCC is at the core of the railway network.

“The qualified staff members working in the OCC are responsible for the overall control and command of the system including all train movements and this move is an important step forward for the project.”
