Contractors have been celebrating the first breakthrough on the Ceneri Base Tunnel project – 13 months ahead of schedule.

The tunnelling milestone occurred 400 metres from the south portal of Vezia in the west tunnel on March 17.

Around 1.5 kilometres still needs to be excavated in the west tunnel. The first breakthrough is due to take place in the east tunnel at the end of this month.

Tunnelling work is scheduled for completion in early 2016 and the railway is still on course to be commissioned in December 2019.

The Ceneri Base Tunnel – a 15.4-kilometre railway tunnel through Monte Ceneri – is being constructed alongside the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

Once complete both tunnels will be integrated into the existing Gotthard Railway route between Switzerland and Italy, significantly reducing journey times through the Swiss Alps.
