An extension of the Dubai Metro Red Line has been approved and is set to open in time for World Expo 2020, the RTA has announced.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the planned extension which will link the metro to the Expo 2020 site.

The extension will be around 15 kilometres long and include seven new stations.

The line will include a combination of elevated and underground stations, starting at Nakheel Harbour & Tower station and serving the Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estate and DIP districts.

A tender for the works is scheduled to be released in July.

Once complete, the extension will take the length of Dubai’s rail network to 101 kilometres.
