Services will begin later this week on the full length of the high-speed Atlantic Axis railway linking Ferrol with the Portugese border.

The first train will carry passengers between A Coruña and Vigo on April 18. Tickets are now on sale.

Around €840 million has been invested in the 241-kilometre railway. Its construction has included the 1.6-kilometre Ulla viaduct, remodelling of Pontevedra and Arousa stations, and the construction of Vigo-Urzáiz station.

Completion of the Padrón-Vilagarcía and Arcade-Vigo Urzáiz sections of railway marks the end of the project. Services will now begin operating on the 93.9-kilometre Santiago de Compostela-Vigo section of the line. Trains are already operating on the Santiago-A Coruña section.

Opening of the line will result in an average 40 per cent reduction in travel times and a 50 per cent increase in capacity.
