The number of passengers using New York’s subway system has reached its highest level in 65 years, growing by 2.6 per cent to 1.75 billion in 2014.

MTA said that passenger numbers last year were at “a level not seen since the post-World War II boom”.

Ridership increased on all lines, with the biggest increases recorded in parts of Brooklyn and Queens experiencing significant residential development.

MTA chairman and chief executive Thomas Prendergast said: “The renaissance of the New York City subway is a miracle for those who remember the decrepit system of the 1970s and the 1980s, but moving more than six million customers a day means even minor disruptions now can create major delays.

“We are aggressively working to combat delays and improve maintenance, but the ultimate solution requires investing in infrastructure upgrades such as Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling systems to accommodate every one of our growing number of customers.”
